kowton and tom dicicco, residing in bristol and manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. kowtons seems to come from house, perhaps also electro and garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. toms music is techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 bpm. with these distinctive styles the idea of a split ep might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each others originals on the other. tom diciccos original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. kowtons is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along. on the other side of the record, kowtons remix of toms original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. toms remix of kowton rounds off the ep with a return to stab driven techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing.

following the debut lp on ki, we have put together a few of our favorite artists to remix some tracks of their choice. it was important for us, that the artists kept their individual approach to their genre, so that we could get a very diverse release. first up is the japanese producer stereociti, who just released his debut album on mojuba records. he gives the title track >reisegefaehrte< his very own deep touch. second up is our close friend glitterbug, who seems to create a very own genre with his interpretation of >barracuda<. on the flipside stundman goes straight to the dancefloor. jacking beats and pounding basslines are his >reminder<. and as if p.laoss knew what the real deal is, he turned >subsistence< into a fata morgana trip back to the time when dub was really dub. perfect completion of what we expected from this remix ep.

the third release on the world unknown label is a very meaty affair that coincides with the second birthday of the club night in brixton. on side w timothy j. fairplay fuses ancient egypt with late 80s belgium and drops it slap bang into the near future with the monolithic techno beast that is >cleopatra loves the acid<. its already been played in discos and on the bbc by andrew weatherall, for whom tim handles engineering and co-production duties in his day job, and is set to become a pounding anthem on the more adventurous dancefloors over the coming months. side u is a more throbbing psychedelic affair. kalidasa is the production alter-ego of tim rivers who runs the always excellent theacidhouse.com website. it<s exactly the kind of heavyweight midtempo tune that causes sweaty pandemonium at world unknown. if the word balearic still meant now what it did to from 87-92 then thats precisely what youd call this, most likely with the prefix >heavy<. but it doesnt so you cant, or can you?

almost a year overdue, but finally the new release from the dutch techno label aftertaste recordings is unleashed! continuing the strategy of compiling dark and pounding techno tracks from some of their favourite artsists means that each release is focussed, yet there is enough character to the individual tracks for it not to get too samey.
this time its up to julian sync, po, sagae & kawakami, tachini and a remix by marco rane. overall another solid & useful compilation ep from aftertaste!

raf pisani and marco conte, aka audiomatiques, have long been involved in techno but its since they began working together as audiomatiques that everything began to click. together with roberto capuano, an artist who has already released for loose, claque musique, monique musique and suara, the duo have delivered 3 sterling tracks, which are backed by a remix from rino cerrone, for loose. cerrone takes full advantage of his position as label boss and places his remix of >so bad< in pole. its a walloping but low slung affair riddled with hypnotic rises and false drops which build incredible tension. in original form, >so bad< is a pounding affair. the focus is centred around an unholy bass heavy kick with just the minimum of percussive flourishes and vocal effects doing the rest with aplomb. >mind trip<, while equally as heavy, is fluid and slick. swinging tribal vibes and some clever effects work paired with an airtight arrangement makes for a surefire club burner. finally, the bizarre yet compelling leads of the aptly titled >crazy synth< close proceedings with a fever-dream fervour. original and memorable, this is a genuinely anthemic cut.

berghains marcel fengler presents the fifth installment in the clubs expanding mix series. marcel fengler has proved filling floors doesnt have to be about ticking boxes. the versatile mix is a perfect example of the type of dexterity, sensitivity and scope he possesses as a dj. these same attributes can be found in the work of the producers featured on this 12 sampler. a similarly dedicated dj and producer, peter van hoesens incredible axis mundi is a real modern opus. hoesens rich synth warblings and deep bass elements could raise hairs youd never even discovered before... talented duo reagenz aka move d and jonah sharp have had a productive year, and their exclusive track, the labyrinth, proves just that. leading us into a psychedelic dance of funk, dub and abstraction, this slow burning jam fits perfectly in the later stages of fenglers mix. the mysterious vril is behind the dirty, dusty releases appearing on the staub series from geigling. uv follows that convention in a pounding, searing filtered techno tool that explores many zones over its powerful 10 minute reign

big support van oa. bas mooy, dvs1, perc, tommy four seven, go hiyama, paul mac and many more... just before the summer hits, were breaking it down with a massive techno bomb from the subs of scotland. this time its the mighty forward strategy group which will be responsible for some serious damage on the floor. the squad which delivered some amazing tunes for perc traxx and recently did a podcast for clr recordings are now up for a true banger on dynamic reflection. on this ep they split the force and bring both their own solo actions. smear takes over with >inert<, tweaking his synths into phased edges with a phat groove on top. the >retail & leisure< remix is more subdued and trips away with a smooth acid bassline through the track. on the b-side the other half of fsg. patrick walker smashes down the door with a more darker groove. pounding kickdrums, dark rhythms and smooth soundscapes is whats his recipe is for >phase linear<. this will definitely hit the big rooms!! boex & miller breaking down the beat in their rework, which makes the perfect balance for this ep. all n all a superior release by these gents and remix heavyweights. lets pray for more of this pure quality stuff and keep our eyes on the the future. the scene need more labels like this which reflects the current techno movement and promises loads more of that sweet stuff in days to come... dynamic reflection will represent only the true spirit of pure techno, they will put only the quality stuff back on the dancefloor!
